Pilling (sometimes referred to as bobbling) is the formation of fuzzy balls on the surface of wool clothing. Pilling is caused by rubbing during wear and will vary depending on the fibre, garment, knit size, and the wearer.
Due to the natural characteristics of cashmere and natural fibre yarns, some pilling may occur on knitwear garments. The cause of pilling is complex, therefore it cannot be guaranteed by anyone that it won't occur on a garment. Pilling is completely normal.
You may see more pilling in knit garments with a ‘looser’ yarn, than in ‘tighter’ knitted garments, this is because the yarn ends can come free a little more easily. You might also see more pilling if the wearer is more active, or if the garment constantly comes into contact with other surfaces, for example, while sitting at a desk, in your car, or where your bag strap sits.
You can minimise the formation of pilling by:
- Turning your wool clothes inside out before washing
- Avoiding using a fabric softener
- Minimising abrasion while wearing wool clothing
How to remove pilling
- A small amount of pilling can be removed by hand. This should be done regularly after washing and drying.
- A comb can be used gently to remove pills, however we do not recommend this for large areas or heavy pilling.
- You can carefully depill your garment at home using a depill or fabric shaving machine. Please follow individual machine instructions for this.
- Many drycleaners offer a service to depill garments.
